Strand 5: Family Engagement
Students, staff, families and the larger community all benefit when schools are able to forge equitable collaboration that support implementation of multi-tiered approaches. In this strand, participants will explore six essential elements of meaningful family engagement in multi-tiered systems of supports that deepen family and school commitment to meaningful partnership while increasing specific student and family outcomes across domains. Given the past 18 months, we honor that divisions and schools have recognized family engagement as critical to the success of our students.
Learning Intentions
Given the past 18 months, we honor that divisions and schools have recognized family engagement as critical to the success of our students. Participants will:
- Begin to develop or refine a vision for family and community engagement.
- Understand the value of, and strategies for, collecting and sharing key data on family collaboration.
- Recognize the critical importance of empowering all families as partners in decision making.
- Action plan toward equitable family and community collaboration to improve student well-being and academic success, while recognizing the ongoing traumatic stress experienced by students, families and educators.

Given the current diversity of virtual and in-person learning approaches related to the pandemic response, we understand the nature of family engagement has changed. In light of these circumstances, participants will identify the value of, and strategies for collecting key data on family perceptions, participation, and equitable access to learning. Participants will also identify ways to support family and community engagement efforts to improve student well-being and academic outcomes through systems and practices. Participants will begin to develop or refine a vision for family and community engagement.
Intended Audience: Ideally, attendees will have completed Strands 1, 2, and 3.
Learning Intentions:
- Examine actions, resources, skills, motivators and data related to each of the six essential family engagement elements.
- Further develop vision and action steps to respond to areas of identified need and identify new opportunities for increasing family and community voice and participation in systems change.

In preparation for the event, we ask that you have your Vision and Data Worksheet available.
Please be prepared to:
- ."Show and share" 10 minutes
- Your finalized vision for family engagement (be creative!).
- Share your efforts related to one or more of the six components.
Note: if you'd like to share slides, feel free to send them in advance to kherakovich@vcu.edu.
- In breakout rooms, report on: data collected, how and where the data were shared, and how your division used attendance and family engagement data.
